Does anybody know when the cargo planes for the race will be arriving at AUS? I'd like to head down and take some pictures.

AUS = Austin/Bergstrom Int'l Airport. "Down" as in the airport is on the south side of town and I live up north of town.

I believe F1 charters out 747s for it. But it seems to vary from airline to airline.

I went down to the airport two years ago on the day after the race, and there were a few Atlas Air Cargo 747s and a Singapore 747 cargo. Plus more GA traffic than I've ever seen before. Lots of planes from Mexico, and a few from South America. Good days for spotting!

Ah yes, Atlas Air. Ferried me from the US to Kyrgyzstan for deployment to Afghanistan.

First class, right? That must have been a long-ass flight.

I was being a smartypants. Forgive me.

No apologies necessary. You should have used the smartypants font, though.

Nah, my seat was at the leading edge of the starboard wing, my favorite coach seat. Decent enough leg room, despite my feet sharing some space with an M16. Food was good too. We had three stops along the way, each a couple hours long. Slept for most of the Atlantic crossing and faded in and out as we flew over Ukraine, Russia, and the other -stans.

In montreal, they usually arrive on Tuesday morning.

For what it's worth.

Pretty sure you can find the info on the internets..

COTA has been posting pics on their FB page of various containers and pallets arriving for several weeks, the Mercedes safety cars arrived last week

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. I'll still use it as an excuse to go take pictures. Just don't tell my wife.

I hope so too. The official observation spot at AUS isn't ideal. It's next to the shorter runway (17L/35R), so I won't get to see much heavy action. The largest plane that uses that runway is the 757. But it will still be fun!
